Fray: Reloaded Edition coming November 12 12

Fray: Reloaded Edition coming November 12

Fray: Reloaded Edition, is an updated and expanded version of Fray, integrating player feedback, improving the gameplay and mechanics, as well as adding new content and functionalities.

When we released Fray back in June 2012, we knew the game was still rough, but we did not expect it to be as rough as it turned out to be. Although we knew the game would still need a few months of work, seeing our financial situation at the time, we had no choice but to release the game as is. In retrospect should we have done this? No, of course not...

The release was plagued with technical issues, and although we tried to correct the problems in the  most efficient and timely manner, the damage was done.

As an independent game studio, things couldn’t have gone worse, as we realized the quality of the release was sub-par to say the least. Our goal was never to put a product in this state in players’ hands, and we are terribly sorry for any inconvenience we have caused.

Since, we have been working around the clock on a game we believe to be truly fun and original, pouring all our heart and soul into making this the experience you deserve. This is our first game and we made terrible mistakes, but we have learned and grown from this and want you to believe in us. We know this is a good game and that you will enjoy what we have been creating.

We have been correcting our mistakes ever since, with Fray: Reloaded Edition, the result of both player feedback and our own ideas. We changed the server software and UI, and added a training map as well as some small missions for solo play. We also rebalanced the classes and weapons, added new special effects, and polished the game as best as we could to deliver the experience we promised initially.

With Fray: Reloaded Edition coming November 12th, we will make amends with players who bought Fray in June, by offering them a free Steam game key and the game’s OST, as well as giving new players a chance to play the game through a demo version that will be out alongside the release. We hope that players and critics will give us a second chance with the exciting and original multiplayer turn based strategy game that we will complete on November 12th.

Fray: Reloaded Edition - Solo Maps 0

Fray: Reloaded Edition - Solo Maps

In the upcoming Reloaded Edition of Fray, we have implement one of the most requested features by players: Solo play.

In the game you will now have access to a "Training" mode where difefrent maps are availble. The first map is a Training Map, with a wide range of possibilities, mobile and static targets, some gouped, some spread, a wide variety of cover, so that you can test your weapons and squad, try new tactics and see how each feature in Fray will work on the battlefield. The Live Fire Maps is another game mode that we put in Fray to test your skills as a player. Built as a reverse tower defense, you must survive a maze, with many different types of turrets with different abilities hide. This will help players sharpen their skills, or warm up before a game.

Here is a short video presenting these modes, enjoy!

Fray: Reloaded Edition - Gameplay Commentary

Hi Everyone,

Here is a gameplay video from Fray: Reloaded Edition, in which Yshaana fights against Lysiah in Cronalabs. It covers some of the new changes in the game, some of the new effects and shows the new interface in play. Please note that the cursor isn't showing because of the video capturing software.

We will be doing more videos like these in the next few weeks, the next one will present our new Training mode that will be added with the patch.

Fray: Reloaded Edition - New Interface 0

Fray: Reloaded Edition - New Interface

Fray: Reloaded Edition, coming in the next few weeks will add many new elements to Fray, such as a new interface, new special effects and feedbacks, solo play and a training map, and many other improvements.

Today, we will be presenting you with one of our major changes in Fray: Reloaded Edition, the User Interface.

In response to player feedback, we wanted to change the UI to make it a lot more user friendly, as we realise that the old interface was a little clunky, especially during the Resolution phase.

Here is a video showcasing the changes:

Here are more details on the changes to the UI:

Old definition phase interface in Fray (Click to Enlarge)

In Fray: Reloaded Edition, we have decided to make a much less bulky interface, leaving a lot of breathing room on the screen, giving the player more space to watch characters on the playing field. The whole hard edged interface that was present in Fray has been swapped for a more rounded feel, with information better spread around the screen, all the while conserving the general principles of the original UI.

Squad selection is now clearly seperated from the character controls and we also moved the minimap to a more useful position.

In addition to the looks, we redesigned the menus when changing weapons, equipment or stances, we added or changed the way information was given to players, gave better visibility for ammo and added a visible timer on equipment cooldowns. Another change was made to the radial menu that was shown when holding down right click to appear much more readable. We have also added a "quick select" menu to the right side of the screen to allow players to rapidly give their orders to the characters visible to their team, helping identify quickly which characters are visible on the battlefield.

Another addition to the interface is the Quick Select panel to the right side of the screen. This dynamically shows you which characters, friendly or enemy, are visible. It allows you to quickly see the status (HP, buffs and debuffs...) or classes and issue orders without having to select the characters on the battlefield, so that the action is much faster.

The Resolution phase interface has undergone the biggest change. Gone is the "spreadsheet" layout, that wasn't very dynamic and often difficult to comprehend.

Old resolution phase interface in Fray (Click to Enlarge)

The new Resolution User Interface in Fray: Reloaded Edition gives information much quicker to the player, allows a lot more control and looks a lot better. Some of the new additions to the interface are dynamic character portraits to see how a player's squad is affected in combat, a replay option to directly replay the Resolution, and a skip option to allow faster turns.

The largest addtion is the dynamic combat log, that gives you information on all the actions that take place on the battlefield. Moving a character, healing, debuffs, changing weapons or stances, you can follow all this in real time as it happens. We wanted someting easily identifyable to players, giving the most information in the quickest manner.

Here are a few examples of what you can see on the battlefield for the combat log:

Healing: The medic heals the Support for 22 HP.

Hit: The character shot the enemy Shadow for 28 HP.

Movement: The character moved 16 cells.

Multiple hits: The character hit 3 targets for a total of 59 damage.

Shot mode switch: the character switch weapon firing mode.

Every action during the resolution has its own Combat Log entry and they are displayed on the screen as the action unfolds. If a player want to see a specific action that took place, he can just click on the action and it will replay immediately from that point.

We hope you enjoy the new UI, in the next few weeks we'll be presenting other parts that have been changed or redesigned in Fray: Reloaded Edition. Don't hesitate to give us your feedback!

Fray: Reloaded Edition - New SFX and Feedbacks 0

With our large content patch getting closer, we want to show you what we have been working on for the past few months. In Fray: Reloaded Edition, we are updating, upgrading and changing so many things around, that we will be updating you on all these details in the next few weeks. To start off, we would like to present you with some of the new SFX and Feedbacks we have been working on in the game.

Feedbacks are very important in a game, as they give the player instinctual visibility of an area of effect, what type of item or weapon was used, or many different kind of informations that Game Designers desire to convey to the player. When Fray was released, many of those feedbacks were very simplistic, often static, and sometimes difficult to represent. With Fray: Reloaded Edition, we wanted to revisit these feedbacks and effects to add more dynamism on the battlefield and give the game a more polished look. In the video here under, the Feedbacks are shown out of the game so that you can see them up close and get a feel of what they wll look like.

Don't hesitate to comment and give us feedback yourselves!

Fray 1.06 available for Download

Fray patch 1.06 is available for download on Steam!

This patch paves the way to our much more extensive update coming in a few weeks that will add some solo features, a new interface, training map, new class balance and new weapon and feedback effects.

The major change with 1.06 is the server change, as we have deployed Fray on a new server infrastructure. This will fix many, if not all, connexion issues that people have been experiencing (the dredded "? vs ?" issue comes to mind), adds a matchmaking system and passworded games. This patch also fixes some other smaller bugs that were remaining in the game.

We realize that things are going a bit slow right now in Fray, but we are preparing some big things for the upcoming weeks, so stick around. We will be showing off some of the new effects and art in the game, and organizing play sessions with the Dev team on Wednesdays from 5PM to 7PM CET, so come and join us!

Here are the full patch notes:

Fray 1.05, du Français and things to come. 3

Fray 1.05, du Français and things to come.

Fray 1.05 is out and brings the last major fixes to Gameplay, until our big content patch in a few weeks.

With this patch, we are adding French language support. French users can now change language in the Setting menu, Top Right corner. Another new addition to the build, is the ELO system that will allow player ranking, with the number changing depending of each of your matches and the ranking of you enemy. This system is still in testing until the big content patch. We have also addedplayer levels and squad composition directly withing the Game Creation screen, allowing everyone to see other players composition and levels before starting a match. Kick and Move functions have also been added for people who host a game. Finally, we have added Fog of War visibility on the Map and Minimap, that will allow you to view directly what your characters can see on the battlefield.

With this patch, we are leaving the "weekly patch" phase to allow us to work on bigger and better things for Fray.

First of all, we are working on Single player modes, with a training map that will allow you to test your team in a special environment with different rooms set up, some containing static or moving targets, others with Turrets that will increase in challenge the further in the room you venture. We are also working on an AI for single player skirmishes that should be available further down the line.

We are revamping the game graphically, creating a brand new in game UI, that will be much more readable and intuitive than the current one, especially for the Resolution phase. We are also working on tuning the ingame animations, trailshots and special effects adding much needed eye candy.

Also in development, we are rebalancing the game following player feedback, to add more tactical depth to the game all the while giving a better chance to fresh new players. In addition to this, we will be creating a Quick Game option, that will use a match making system and use your default squad settings to find an opponent of your caliber.

We are also working hard to get the game running for 32bit system users and we hope to have good news on that front in the next few weeks.

These are just a small part of things to come, and we hope to have other updates before the big content update in the next few weeks. More details as we go forward!
